1. Select a child to monitor.
2. Observe the child during phonological awareness activities.
3. Use the CIRCLE formal assessment tool to assess the child.
4. Share your observations and assessment results with other
teachers taking this course. In your discussion area, tell us:
•What did you learn about the child?
•Where are they in terms of the Phonological Awareness Continuum? Are there any gaps?
•Was the child where you expected him or her to be?
•Compare the results of your informal observations with the formal assessment. Were the results similar?
•How can you support this child's development of phonological awareness? What activities would be helpful? What types of instruction would be helpful (e.g., one-on-one, small group)?
